Join Us

Would you like to join a dynamic, fascinating hobby which can take you around amazing venues, recreating a period of our history filled with heroes and villains alike?

Then why not join us!

In addition to our public displays, members participate in Viking banquets, training weekends and weekends living in the Dark Ages away from public view. Show season occurs from Easter through to Autumn and could see you attend a show every weekend if you are willing to travel.

Depending on your interests, we can train you in the use of metal hand weapons, a bow and slings. You can also participate in any of a wide range of craft skills practiced by our members.

We are family-orientated, and our events include activities for young children and teenagers.

We will help you put together your first costume and assemble enough kit to take part in your first event.

To take part in our events and join Manaraefan, you need to become a member of The Vikings Society. Contact us to find out about coming along to a training session and we can provide membership forms and answer any questions for you.

For all the latest news, you can join our Facebook group - Friends of Manaraefan or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Our Training Sessions

We aim to train twice a month but this may vary during show season and availability of our training venues.

Training usually takes place every other Sunday between 1pm - 5pm.

We have two training venues based in Fleet (Hampshire) and Downton (Wiltshire). The majority of training takes place at Downton but please contact us in advance to ensure we can let you know the correct venue.

Training sessions are £3 per adult and 50p for Children (Children are free if they are members).

Combat & Missiles Training

If you are interested in learning how to take part in battles like a Viking or Saxon, we can train you how to use a variety of weapons including swords, axes and spears. We also participate in missiles and archery training.

Our combat training officers will teach you how to use the weapons safely and authentically so you can learn how to portray the Vikings and Saxons at a whole host of events.

Living History & Crafts Training

If you have more of an interest in arts and crafts, we take part in a variety of crafts and skills that were commonplace during the Viking/Saxon age, including cooking, naalbinding, tablet braiding, woodworking as just a few examples.

Vikings and Saxons didn’t spend all their time fighting so our living history and crafts allow us to portray what we understand to be an insight into everyday life during this period. It’s also a great time to socialise and talk to members of the public about your crafts and the knowledge you’ve learnt along the way.
